CHANGE

REIMAGINE

Moving resources where change happens.

We're a collaboration between two long-time colleagues who've come together with a shared belief: that support and resourcing for movements and organizers needs to change.

We continue to see those carrying out the most critical work of our time — from climate justice campaigning to feminist organizing — struggle to access the right support at the right time, in ways that actually respect their leadership and realities.

At the same time, we’ve worked closely with funders who genuinely want to show up better — to move resources more effectively, build deeper trust, and step away from transactional funding relationships — but aren’t always sure how.

ReImagine Change was created to help bridge that gap.

Our collective experience has taught us that when support is rooted in trust, honest reflection and meaningful relationship-building, movements and organizers become more resilient, deliberate, and capable of sustaining their impact.

What We Do

We support social change leaders (individuals, groups or movements) organizing across environmental and social justice. Moving beyond conventional, one-size-fits-all approaches, we embrace co-learning, iteration and collaboration, building on collective strengths in ways that can really create lasting change. We understand that change comes in many forms—abrupt, slow, beautiful, messy—and we embrace all of it.

We bring years of experience working directly with grassroots movements and funders, helping to make support and funding more accessible and responsive. Our work is shaped by what we’ve seen up close — the real challenges, the gaps, and the possibilities for doing things differently.

About Us

Zainab Aliyu, Phd

Lagos, Nigeria

I’ve spent my career working at the intersection of climate justice, community empowerment, and research — directing my efforts towards uplifting and empowering movements and grassroots groups across sub-Saharan Africa. With a PhD in International Development and an MSc in Sustainable Development, I see a need to bridge the gap between research and action, ensuring that knowledge translates into real-world impact. I’m deeply invested in what it takes to move ideas and knowledge into action, in ways that truly serve communities on the ground. Over these past few years, I’ve collaborated with more than 30 climate justice organizations globally, mentored more than 60 emerging leaders across 12 countries, and supported efforts to guide resources where they’re needed most. I also contribute to international climate policy spaces, sharing perspectives on how grassroots activism can drive meaningful policy change in sub-Saharan Africa. Alongside this work, I serve on the Advisory Board of the Water Justice Fund and Trustee at Population Matters and previously served as a 2023 Fellow with Women for the Environment Africa (WE Africa). I’m driven by the belief that climate justice is ultimately about people, and that lasting change comes when environmental action is rooted in the leadership of those most affected. When I'm not actively supporting climate and social justice movements, I enjoy walking, listening to podcasts, and exploring new places. I often reflect on the unique differences in our experiences while also recognizing the small, everyday moments that connect us. I cherish the time spent playing with and learning from children — these interactions continually inspire my work and strengthen my commitment to their future.

I work at the messy intersections of philanthropy and activism, supporting movements and funders to navigate and address the challenges of resourcing climate and social justice. For the past 15+ years, I’ve partnered with organizations and citizen-led initiatives to unlock critical funding, reshape how resources flow, and engage in the deeper, often uncomfortable conversations around power, access, and sustainability. My accidental journey as a fundraiser began in 2016, when I led efforts to sustain essential refugee programming during a period of rapid defunding and intensified political opposition — ultimately mobilizing $32 million over two years. It was through that work that I began to see the deeper links between displacement and the escalating climate crisis — and eventually shifted my focus to supporting movements tackling these root causes. Since then, I’ve worked alongside more than 50 movements and organizations, supporting them to access vital funding, challenge harmful practices, and open doors to spaces that still remain closed to frontline leaders and communities. Together with activists, I also helped co-create an experimental funding initiative designed to reach young climate justice leaders who are often excluded from traditional funding and platforming spaces, providing direct financial support, compensation for their leadership, and resources to strengthen their visibility and voice. At the heart of my work is a belief that funding should serve and strengthen movements — not distract from or dilute their purpose. I bring a practical, hands-on approach grounded in care, honesty, and deep respect for the people driving change. I aim to foster spaces where resourcing this work feels more possible and sustainable, while also pushing to shift the systems that shape how resources move in the first place. A native New Yorker now based in Austria, I’m often looking for ways to connect with the community around me — learning German (slowly), adjusting to a new pace of life, and finding comfort in routines that make this place feel like home.
